It feels apt for a heist movie to purloin ideas from other films, but the grand larceny committed here doesn't make this thriller any more enjoyable. High-class art thief Morgan Freeman enlists the help of rookie Antonio Banderas to break into the Romanov jewellery vault in New York. He plans to steal two Fabergé eggs in order to pay off the debts owed to the Russian mafia by his late partner. While plotting their assault on the unbreachable safe, the pair crack gags about the Jules Dassin classics Rififi (1955) and Topkapi (1964). In fact, director Mimi Leder shamelessly borrows from the Mission: Impossible and Ocean's Eleven franchises, and there's even a lazy The Shawshank Redemption poster gag. For all the slickness and the surfeit of twists, there isn't a modicum of suspense, nor much spark between the leads. However, Robert Forster is suitably fixated as the NYPD lieutenant bent on bringing Freeman to book.
