Dave Golder

A revenge-fuelled Chinese restaurant owner takes on Irish terrorists and the British government in this action thriller that's full of surprises. Former special forces operator Quan (Jackie Chan) is living a quiet life in London with his daughter. When she is killed in a terrorist act committed by a IRA splinter group, Quan determines to confront the killers. While it sounds like a Taken or John Wick-style vehicle for Chan, this is actually a very different beast tonally, with two-time Bond helmer Martin Campbell delivering an engaging and edgy political thriller. Chan is magnificent as the ageing, surly Quan, clearly feeling every knock he takes, while Pierce Brosnan turns in one of best performances as a former IRA man who is now deputy First Minister of Northern Ireland.

Although it's hampered by its loose plotting and uneven supporting performances, the characters in this lo-fi indie largely feel real and lived-in.

Kraven the Hunter review: Better than Morbius and Madame Web at least

Aaron Taylor-Johnson is in muscular form but a leaden script keeps things underwhelming.
