Robyn Karney

A famous violinist employs a young pianist to give his daughter lessons, but falls in love with her, leaves his wife, and embarks on a concert tour with the girl as his accompanist. Directed by one of Sweden's foremost film-makers of the period, Gustaf Molander, and starring that country's most distinguished leading man, Gösta Ekman, this classy bittersweet romantic drama is notable for instigating the international career of Ingrid Bergman. David Selznick saw the film and, two years later, invited the relative unknown to Hollywood to star in an English-language remake, repeating her role as the young pianist opposite Leslie Howard. The rest, as they say, is history.
