Summary

Drama featuring Dali Benssalah, Adèle Exarchopoulos and Gilles Lelouche. After spending 10 years behind bars for burglary, inmate Nassim is invited to take part in a "restorative justice" session, in which he will meet the victims of crimes similar to the ones that he committed. During emotional conversations, old wounds are reopened as the participants struggle to understand and accept each other.

Like a more convivial 12 Angry Men, writer/director Jeanne Herry's excellent, French-language drama uses a series of deceptively simple dialogues to craft a complex examination of penal ethics. Based on research conducted by Herry, the film explores a process of "restorative justice". Three robbery survivors sit down with men convicted of committing similar crimes, for mediated meetings that will allow each party to explain their perspectives and, hopefully, develop some mutual understanding. Meanwhile, in a nicely focused subplot, a young woman (Adèle Exarchopoulos) seeks to meet with her elder brother, who sexually abused her. Herry's screenplay is impeccable, building the characters with precision and skilfully avoiding any distracting platitudes in the dialogue. The ensemble cast rises to the occasion, too, with impressively naturalistic performances. Exarchopoulos and Elodie Bouchez carry their plot with precision and empathy, while Dali Benssalah does sterling work as a wary young convict who slowly warms up. Taking a balanced approach to questions of victimhood and restitution, and directing with subtle visual flair, Herry weaves a riveting and resonant tapestry that argues for a positive, progressive vision of society.
