This muscular, multi-stranded look at the US drug epidemic sees a cracking cast take on an all-too-familiar tale. Set in Oklahoma, the cobweb-like story shows how addicts, dealers, cartels and cops are all connected to the highly dangerous fentanyl - or "king ivory", to give it one of its street names. James Badge Dale is Layne, an uncompromising narcotics officer whose own high-school age son (Jasper Jones) is hooked on the drug. On the flipside, Better Call Saul star Michael Mando is a Mexican fentanyl pusher, and the chameleonic Ben Foster an ex-con working for a rival gang. Writer/director John Swab conjures a gritty authenticity, with drab, grimy Tulsa locales and frenzied, handheld camerawork. Some of it is confusing, some of it hackneyed, some of it ultra-violent. But when you have the likes of Melissa Leo buried deep in the cast, you know the performances will be first-rate. The film owes a hefty debt to Steven Soderbergh's Traffic, but it's an honest depiction of a drug-riddled underclass in America that is also laced with sadness.
