Taking fashion as its focus, this celebration of style charts how hip-hop grew out of the ghetto to influence trends on a national and global level. Director Sacha Jenkins traces the scene back to the lawless Black neighbourhoods of 1970s New York, when violent confrontations between gangs gave way to B-Boy rap battles, and wearing the name of your crew became something more than a weapon. Kangol hats, Cazal glasses and Adidas sneakers all made an early impression, but aspirational luxury brands soon began to take hold. The Lo-Lifes gang took to plundering from the Ralph Lauren store, but designers such as Tommy Hilfiger gave their stuff away on the streets to kick-start new trends ("like a drug dealer giving out free hits"). Jenkins packs his film with such irresistible anecdotes as he carries the story forward, but to his credit refrains from glossing over the economic ironies of looking "fresh" when you're flat broke. It all makes for a fascinating recent history lesson, with rap superstars-turned-designers Sean "Puffy" Combs and Kanye West, game-changing Cross Colours entrepreneur Carl Jones and former Vogue editor André Leon Talley among the personalities queuing up to offer their expert testimony.
