Veteran mailman Bruce Dern enlists small-town mechanic Liam Hemsworth to fake his murder and swindle the US postal service out of $100,000 in this low-key but starry thriller. However, mild-mannered and taciturn local sheriff John Malkovich suspects more complex wrongdoings are afoot, as a series of seemingly unrelated incidents causes the body count to rise for real. Writer Roberto Patino's script is populated with a succession of misfit characters that, in tandem with a couple of borderline implausible plot twists, give the story the air of a Coen brothers movie but with only a fraction of the humour. Nonetheless, it's a solid portrait of semi-rural America (Cut Bank is the name of the town where events take place), with Hemsworth representing frustrated youth yearning for a better life somewhere else. Malkovich impresses as the soft-spoken centre around which the escalating troubles revolve, while the heavyweight supporting cast features good work from Billy Bob Thornton as Hemsworth's no-nonsense boss and Oliver Platt as a fast-talking postal executive from the big city.
