A Ming dynasty warrior finds himself transported to modern-day Hong Kong in this blockbuster remake of another martial arts fantasy, Yuen Biao's The Iceman Cometh (1989). Donnie Yen stars as the Imperial bodyguard who is framed as a traitor and hunted by his former compatriots, only for a freak avalanche to freeze them all in time. There's fun to be had as Yen is awoken from his cryogenic slumber 400 years later, just in time for Halloween - the one day where his curious dress goes unnoticed. And the curry-hungry antics of his recently thawed pursuers adds further comic zing to proceedings. However, the jarring shifts between puerile fart gags and scenes of torture are seriously misjudged, and the ambitious action finale leans too heavily on CGI to generate any real excitement. Yet for all its inconsistencies - and perhaps because of its peculiarities - there is a desire to know where the story is headed, making the prospect of part two not entirely unwelcome.
