In 18th-century Denmark, a successful potato harvest is everything to Ludvig Kahlen (Mads Mikkelsen). The bastard son of a nobleman, he is determined to farm a patch of windswept heathland, earn the king's favour and become a nobleman himself. Kahlen assembles a ragtag collection of workers to help, which includes his housemaid Ann Barbara (Amanda Collin), who is on the run with her husband from cruel landowner Frederik de Schinkel (Simon Bennebjerg). With Kahlen's potential success threatening de Schinkel's position, the two men become sworn enemies. Mikkelsen is magnificent as the closed-off farmer who suffers setback after setback, and whose stony face gives away very little. De Schinkel alone fails to convince - the consequences of his schemes are genuinely gut-wrenching, but his panto-villain behaviour is predictable. Still, the film's chilly, relentlessly bleak visuals perfectly capture Kahlen's pain.
