Sophie Hyde's heartfelt and semi-autobiographical drama charts family relationships and the exploration of gender identity. Olivia Colman plays Australian film-maker Hannah, who heads to Amsterdam with her nonbinary 16-year-old Frances (Aud Mason-Hyde) to visit Hannah's gay and larger-than-life father Jim (John Lithgow). Known affectionately by the family as Jimpa, he left his daughter behind when she was 13 in a bid to embrace his life more openly. As he and Hannah navigate unresolved issues, heightened by Frances telling their mother they want to stay in the Netherlands, Hyde also explores the tensions around identity and labelling between different generations in the LGBTQ+ community. The trio of central performances are warm and nuanced, while sexuality is explored with a refreshingly open-minded sincerity. Structurally, however, Hyde struggles to juggle all the various subplots and includes a flurry of unnecessary flashbacks that only serve to slow the pace. The film also suffers from repetition and a slide towards melodrama and sentimentality in its final act, although the strong performances are engaging to the last.
