The first Star Wars film since The Rise of Skywalker in 2019 finds the franchise at its most light, pulpy and throwaway. Picking up where the third season of Disney+ series The Mandalorian left off, the film follows mythic bounty hunter Din Djarin (Pedro Pascal) and his adorable sidekick Grogu (often referred to by fans as "Baby Yoda") as they are sent on a mission to rescue Rotta the Hutt, son of the original trilogy's slug-like villain Jabba. Along the way, our heroes do battle with a vast array of the galaxy's nastiest beasts. The plot is episodic and occasionally feels like an abridged season of the show, but with series creator Jon Favreau on directing and co-scripting duties, it all largely zips by at a steady clip, while an impressive score from Ludwig Göransson (Oppenheimer) adds some welcome grandeur. The action sequences are gripping without being especially memorable, while high-profile cast additions Sigourney Weaver and Jeremy Allen White (as the voice of Rotta) are largely wasted. Still, this is a diverting big-screen romp with some fun scenes and touching moments, even if it's far, far away from touching the cinematic high points of the Star Wars legend.
