Satirical psychological thriller starring Mia Wasikowska. Miss Novak, a new teacher at an elite school in England, develops a self-improvement programme that encourages students to eat as little as possible in a bizarre attempt to transcend society's limitations. This Brodiesque satire boasts a striking setting and measured pacing but is likely to prove divisive. When Miss Novak (Mia Wasikowska) arrives at an exclusive school, she teaches a class in "conscious eating" that is designed to help the environment and encourage autophagy through a plant-based mono diet. Trampolinist Ragna (Florence Baker), bulimic Elsa (Ksenia Devriendt), eco-conscious Helen (Gwen Currant), and diabetic ballet dancer Fred (Luke Barker) are ready converts. The working-class Ben (Samuel D Anderson) is passively rebellious - until Novak employs peer pressure to wean him off his need to please his widowed mother. In her second English-language feature, Austrian director/co-writer Jessica Hausner (Little Joe) tugs at so many threads it's unclear what her primary aim is: to poke mordant fun at food culture, cult controlism, consumerist conspiracies, or teenage idealism. While the plot can seem implausible, the film's calculating design - Martin Gschlacht's static camerawork, the monotone dialogue delivery, and Markus Binder's splendidly antic score - helps paper over any cracks.
