Summary
The exuberant disco musical starring the outrageous Village People and Hot Gossip in songs and dances including Liberation, Milk Shake, the title song and, of course, the spectacular Busby Berkeley style YMCA. Aspiring composer Jack Morell and girlfriend Samantha decide that demo tapes are needed to impress their potential backers. Unfortunately, they are short of cash. They decide to find a backing group from the streets of New York's Greenwich Village.

Aspiring songwriter Steve Guttenberg and girlfriend Valerie Perrine scour Greenwich Village looking for singers to do justice to his music in this heavily fictionalised account of how disco sensation the Village People rose to fame. All references to the group's gay genesis were placed on the periphery for commercial safety, although much fun can be had spotting the deliberate clues planted by director Nancy Walker. Reviled at the time for being dishonest, coy and late (disco was on the way out when the movie was released), from a distance this camp catastrophe is great nudge-nudge, wink-wink fun and sums up the entire hedonistic era. Veteran stars June Havoc and Tammy Grimes add kitsch value to the bubbly nostalgia.
