Matt Glasby
Collaborations between old pals Matt Damon and Ben Affleck are always worth a look, and writer/director Joe Carnahan's chewy cop thriller is no exception. Inspired by true events, it strands our heroes and their team (Steven Yeun, Teyana Taylor and Catalina Sandino Moreno) in a Miami safe house full of drug money. With a cartel closing in, and police corruption rife, the temptation to steal the cash is almost overwhelming. While it's great to see Damon and Affleck going at it, what starts out as an ultra-tense siege movie expands into something less satisfying. Carnahan (Narc) directs with his usual blood and thunder, but the film is more interesting when exploring the central moral dilemma than when going hell-for-leather. As an adrenalised Friday-night action flick it is quite a ride, exciting and well-acted. But it's also less than the sum of its admittedly impressive parts.
