A dynamic young Chinese general raises a rag-tag army to defeat marauding Japanese samurai pirates in this period epic, which suggests discipline and strategy rather than military might can win the day. Vastly outnumbered by his enemy, Vincent Zhao's wily commander develops new techniques, tools and weaponry to prevail where others have failed, as he defends his homeland in a series of bloody skirmishes. No action-movie cliché is left unplundered during the often overblown set pieces, but there are surprises in the storytelling, in which Chinese officials are suspicious of the ruling Ming court and dissension is rife among the Japanese ranks. A focus on Zhao's relationship with his independent-minded wife (Wan Qian) injects some humour and humanity, too. While the first hour is rather sluggish, Gordon Chan's film eventually comes good to deliver the exciting finale that the set-up deserves.
