Playing out like a frat-boy version of Black Narcissus, this historical romp from writer/director Jeff Baena (Life after Beth) imagines its fictional 14th-century convent as a ramshackle sorority house where the sisters speak in Valley Girl deadpan and everybody has a secret. Among the Garfagnana nuns having far too much fun are weepy Alessandra (Alison Brie) and spiteful Fernanda (Aubrey Plaza, who also produces), whose habits are well and truly broken when a runaway servant (Dave Franco) seeks refuge with them. Told with droll wit and a light touch, The Little Hours milks its one joke (foul-mouthed nuns lose their grip on reality) for all its worth, delivering as a diverting farce that revels in its own absurdity.
