Jason Schwartzman (Asteroid City) takes a rare but welcome lead role in this Jewish comedy that has its roots in the work of Woody Allen and Albert Brooks, and recalls films like Harold and Maude and The Graduate. He plays Ben Gottlieb, a cantor in an upstate New York synagogue who is enduring both a crisis of faith and a loss of voice. Things change, however, when he encounters his former high-school music teacher, Carla (Carol Kane), who aids him with his singing. In return, he helps her prep for a belated bat mitzvah. Also featuring Triangle of Sadness star Dolly de Leon as the partner of Ben's mother, the appealing cast takes to director/co-writer Nathan Silver's astute, warm script with ease. Schwartzman is ace as the anxious Ben, while it's heartening to see veteran actress Kane as a co-lead, with the pair forging a winning chemistry as Silver refreshingly focuses on them finding a spiritual rather than sexual connection. This is a good-natured, intelligent comic odyssey.
