This gentle indie comedy may not have been Burt Reynolds's final film, but it was the last to be released in the UK in his lifetime, and acts as a worthy and poignant swansong. Reynolds plays Vic Edwards, a frail and lonely former movie star eking out his days in LA, who receives an invitation to Nashville where he is to be honoured at a film festival. However, the event turns out to be a shoestring affair put on by a group of fanboys, prompting the crotchety veteran to abuse their (admittedly meagre) hospitality and go AWOL. Ariel Winter slightly rides roughshod over Reynolds as his self-absorbed rock-chick PA, who unwillingly chauffeurs Reynolds around the places where he grew up. But the ace up writer/director Adam Rifkin's sleeve is weaving scenes from Reynolds's film and TV career into the action, including reveries where Burt is ingeniously stitched into scenes with his younger self in Smokey and the Bandit and Deliverance. More than just a misty-eyed meditation on ageing, this is a celebration of the star's life in all but name and, like the late, great man himself, is not without its considerable charm.
