Mark Braxton

The concentrated comedy goodness of a half-hour Aardman is a thing of wonder. You’re guaranteed smiles, and the craftsmanship is always sublime. This one, however, is off-the-chart fabulous…

The sheep are putting up their decorations at Mossy Bottom, but a quest for bigger stockings than the measly offerings that Bitzer the dog leaves them leads to Shaun’s cousin Timmy getting lost at the local market. The rescue mission that follows is pure plotting perfection.

The beauty as ever is in the detail — the seasonal setting gives us crisp wintry landscapes and twinkling households — and almost every scene contains a gag. Throw in some gentle but still-potent satire about robot hoovers and tablet babysitters, and sackfuls of cheer, and it’s hard not to stand up and applaud at the end.

Even exec-producer and Aardman co-founder Peter Lord told me, “I think it’s the best thing we’ve done with Shaun and that’s a pretty high baaaa!”
