Following his Oscar-laden fantasy The Shape of Water, Guillermo del Toro delivers a luxurious love letter to film noir. Based on William Lindsay Gresham's novel (and previously filmed in 1947 with Tyrone Power in the lead), the film stars Bradley Cooper as a man with a skeleton in his closet who joins a travelling carnival in 1940s America. After learning the ropes from seasoned pros Toni Collette, David Strathairn and Willem Dafoe, he becomes a mentalist in Chicago alongside his wife (Rooney Mara), before a seductive psychologist (Cate Blanchett) raises the stakes. High production values give the film a glossy finish, while del Toro draws on his horror past to accentuate the bloodier moments. Yet, at its core, this is a fascinating character study, with Cooper subverting his usual charismatic screen image and Blanchett offering a glorious spin on the femme fatale archetype. Despite its rather indulgent running time, this is a handsome noir with a jet-black heart.
