A young Nigerian refugee faces the horrors of the British asylum system in this poetic, passionate drama from first-time feature director Joy Gharoro-Akpojotor. Chiefly set in the prison-like Hatchworth Removal Centre, the film charts the journey of Isio (Ronke Adekoluejo), whose only source of comfort in this bleak environment is roommate Farah (Ann Akinjirin). Their relationship becomes something more than friendship in a story that alludes to Isio's own traumatic upbringing in Nigeria, where homosexuality is illegal. In a worthy companion to 2020's award-winning UK refugee tales Limbo and His House, Gharoro-Akpojotor highlights the brutality of a system that confronts Isio about her sexuality in order that she may be granted asylum. Aesthetically, the film shows promise. The expressionist use of colour smartly telegraphs the emotional journey of the characters, while tender, naturalistic performances from Adekoluejo and Akinjirin lift it off the page. Although the abrupt flashbacks to Isio's past don't quite work, coming across as slightly amateurish, Gharoro-Akpojotor convincingly tells a tale of quiet resilience.
