Fourteen actors played gentleman adventurer Captain Hugh Drummond between 1922-69, with this being John Lodge's sole outing. Based on the novel by HC McNeile under the name "Sapper", it sees Drummond and sidekick Algy Longworth (Claud Allister) on the trail of a gunrunning pacifist group who have kidnapped the inventor of a top-secret plane. Victor Jory and Hugh Miller make suitably hissable villains, while silent star Dorothy Mackail appears in her final film role and has some almost screwballishly amusing exchanges with Lodge. Director Norman Lee makes evocative use of locations including a Scottish castle, there's also a tense sequence in a laboratory and a lively punch-up before a fiendishly innovative finale.
