Two newlyweds find arranged marriage a trial in this surreal and inventive comedy horror set in India. Radhika Apte (The Wedding Guest) stars as Uma, who arrives in Mumbai to share a one-room shack with new hubby Gopal (Ashok Pathak), a man she barely knows. Awkward and shy, Gopal goes off drinking with his buddies, leaving Uma to learn the ways of an Indian wife, including cooking from her neighbour Sheetal (Chhaya Kadam). But gradually Uma undergoes a strange, life-changing transformation. Inspired by the likes of Jim Jarmusch and Wes Anderson (think Only Lovers Left Alive meets The Darjeeling Limited), first-time feature director Karan Kandhari shows bold invention here, whether it's the charming use of stop-motion or the sly look at marital disharmony. Apte, who was nominated for Best Lead Performance at the 2024 British Independent Film Awards, is a delight. And a rousing soundtrack, from Bengali folk to the strains of Iggy Pop, whose 1977 track gives the film its title, all lend this a unique flavour.
