Judy Blume's beloved 1970 coming-of-age novel is brought to screen with affection and wit by writer/director Kelly Fremon Craig (The Edge of Seventeen). Abby Ryder Fortson makes an endearingly confused protagonist as 11-year-old Margaret, who negotiates tricky pre-teen territory involving boys, periods, new pals and bras after moving to New Jersey with her parents (Rachel McAdams and Benny Safdie). Margaret is also trying to figure out religion, with her pushy but loving paternal grandmother (Kathy Bates) doing the hard sell on the Jewish side, resulting in an amusing trip to temple. The film shines with a golden glow as Margaret's trials are presented through a prism of kindness and understanding. Room is also made for her mother and grandmother's challenges, with the film attempting to show the full spectrum of the female experience. Despite the charmingly rendered period setting, the dilemmas remain relevant in what amounts to a big, warm hug of a film.
