Summary
Supernatural horror comedy sequel starring Michael Keaton, Winona Ryder and Jenna Ortega. In the decades since narrowly avoiding marriage to the lascivious demon Betelgeuse, Lydia Deetz has found fame as a TV occultist. Her teenage daughter, Astrid, is sceptical and distant, still mourning the death of her father some years before. But then Astrid has her own perilous brush with the beyond - and her despairing mother realises there's only one being who can help her out...

Michael Keaton reprises the ghoulish character that first paired him with director Tim Burton for this enjoyable sequel to the 1988 fantasy comedy. Still hoping to marry Lydia Deetz (Winona Ryder) so he can cross over to the other side, Keaton's underworld-dwelling Betelgeuse spies his chance when Lydia returns to her hometown for her father's funeral. Accompanying her is teen daughter Astrid (Jenna Ortega), manager/boyfriend Rory (Justin Theroux) and stepmother Delia (Catherine O'Hara), who all soon must contend with the mischievous sprite. Co-starring Willem Dafoe (as an afterlife detective) and Monica Bellucci (as Betelgeuse's vengeful ex), the result is amiable if scattergun. For every moment that flops, there are some delicious scenes - including a group of social media influencers getting sucked into their phones. The energetic Keaton relishes his return, not least while miming Richard Marx's late-80s power ballad Right Here Waiting. A story about mothers and daughters, husbands and wives, this is pleasing to the eye, even if it can't exactly be labelled Burton's finest hour.
