This battle-of-the-sexes romantic comedy was the first and most entertaining of the series of films Doris Day made for Universal Studios that gave the singing star a career lift and successfully teamed her with the likes of Cary Grant, James Garner and her most popular partner, Rock Hudson. It's ultra-glossy froth, and the smart plot about Day and Hudson sharing a telephone party line won an Oscar for best story and screenplay. Hudson displays a flair for adroit humour, but the funniest material goes to Tony Randall (never better) and the acerbic Thelma Ritter, and both shine through the heavily piled-on glamour (the hallmark of co-producer Ross Hunter). Director Michael Gordon's use of CinemaScope is exemplary.
