Jeremy Aspinall
Better known for 2007 horror film [Rec] and unsettling 2011 psycho-thriller Sleep Tight, Spanish director Jaume Balagueró plunges into heist territory with this watchable if hardly original caper. Freddie Highmore stars as Thom, a savant-like Cambridge student whose engineering brilliance attracts an offer from Liam Cunningham's doughty treasure hunter to break into the most secure (and mysterious) vault in the world lying beneath Madrid's Bank of Spain. The chance to crack the "impossible mechanism" is too much to resist for the baby-faced boffin, so Thom joins an international crew that includes an enigmatic con artist (Astrid Bergés-Frisbey) and a sceptical ex-soldier (Sam Riley). It's slickly made and the Madrid locations are a bonus, but it's familiar fare, even conjuring up memories of The Italian Job, only here the Spanish capital is engulfed by football fever from Spain's progress in the 2010 World Cup. Still, the elaborate solutions that Thom finds to get in and out of the death-trap vault should keep fans of the genre on their toes.
