A beautiful, painstakingly performed portrait of a clan in crisis, His Three Daughters brings together a trio of outrageously talented actresses for a tale fuelled by familial affection and tension. Natasha Lyonne plays Rachel, who has been living with and tending to her ailing father Vincent (Jay O Sanders) before her sisters descend stressfully on their small New York apartment for Vincent's final days. Carrie Coon is the uptight and rampantly critical Katie, who can't help but sneer at what she perceives to be Rachel's failings, while Elizabeth Olsen is the softer and slightly spaced-out Christina, still very much in new mum mode. With their father's demise imminent, these three women struggle to process their grief and hold their tempers while questioning what their connection will be once he's gone. Writer/director Azazel Jacobs (French Exit) has created something plausible and insightful, taking an approach to confrontation and confessions reminiscent of the work of John Cassavetes. The three leads are incredible and, as their characters unravel, the story proves both wholly cinematic and emotionally true.
