Summary

Supernatural comedy sequel starring Paul Rudd, Carrie Coon, Finn Wolfhard and Mckenna Grace. When penniless mother-of-two Callie moves into her dead father's Oklahoma farm, her 13-year-old daughter, Phoebe, notices unusual activity in the home. Emma Simmonds

The son of Ghostbusters director Ivan Reitman, Jason, pitches it just right with this spooky though never scary reboot of the hit comedy franchise. It's very much in the Stranger Things school of kids getting in on the action, and even features that show's Finn Wolfhard. However, he takes a bit of a backseat to Mckenna Grace as his 12-year-old sister, Phoebe, the bespectacled, chip-off-the-old-block granddaughter of a recently deceased Buster. When the siblings' science-phobic mother (Carrie Coon) moves the three of them into her father's rundown Oklahoma farmhouse, they find themselves at the centre of a supernatural storm, prompting Phoebe to enlist the help of teacher and seismologist Mr Grooberson (Paul Rudd). The script from Reitman Jr and best pal Gil Kenan (Monster House) is full of humour and nods to the first two films in the franchise. There's endearing work from Rudd and Logan Kim, as Phoebe's dinky partner-in-crime Podcast, but it's Coon and Grace who bring most of the pathos, wit and grit. The result is a warm, nostalgic reboot that's as touching as it is crowd-pleasing.
