Peter Lorre is ideally cast in this low-budget gem, as the watchmaker disfigured in a fire who turns to crime and romances a blind girl with tragic results. A truly haunting expressionist B-movie garnished with gruesome poetry, it benefits greatly from Robert Florey's subtle direction that turns a stock horror situation on its head and gives threatening tension to the simmering, sinister undercurrent. Florey directed Lorre once more in The Beast with Five Fingers, but neither reached the same powerful heights again as in this magical mood piece.
