Followers of Netflix Brazilian crime series Brotherhood (2019-22) have a distinct advantage when it comes to this spin-off feature. But it stands alone pretty well, from its combustible opening to its sting-tailed finale. As in the show, 1990s São Paulo lawyer Cristina (Naruna Costa) has to weigh up what constitutes justice in a city of egregious social inequality and establishment corruption, as the counsel for the criminal organisation that was formed by her estranged brother (Seu Jorge) and is now run by her jailed lover (Lee Taylor). Caught in the violent backlash sparked by a clampdown on Brotherhood prisoners, Cristina has to rescue her spoilt niece (Camilla Damião), who has been abducted by a pair of bent cops. Director Pedro Morelli adopts a confrontational style, dotting the action with showy flourishes and drone shots that retreat from ground level to above the skyline. But he also keeps tabs on the human aspect, notably with a subplot about the devoted mother of one of the kidnappers.
