An intelligent, authentic-feeling and switched-on teen comedy in the Booksmart mould, Banana Split marks the emergence of a fresh talent in Hannah Marks. As well as co-writing and co-producing the film, she also stars as April, whose high-school relationship with Nick (Dylan Sprouse) begins and ends in the film's first six minutes, before the opening credits even roll. While April grieves over the break-up, Nick takes up with Clara (rising star Liana Liberato), a new girl in town, and all bets are on a bitchy showdown between the two girls. But that's when this fresh spin on the genre plays its ace, as April and Clara ignore the man in the middle and become secret besties behind his back. Avoiding easy, gross-out laughs, the film instead makes a virtue of its smart, sassy dialogue and believable character interplay. Some raucous misbehaviour aside, it's an essentially sweet tale of teenagers being teenagers, and a rare one that champions friendship over romance.
