Made two years after Pat Kirkwood became the first woman to have her own show on British television, Maurice Elvey's backstage musical depicts the impact the so-called idiot box had on music-hall acts. Adapting Hollywood's trusted "putting on a show" formula, screenwriter Talbot Rothwell has singer Kirkwood and comic husband Nat Jackley refurbish the crumbling theatre that belongs to their American songwriting pal, Bonar Colleano. He's been on the skids since being dumped by entertainer wife Dorothy Squires (in her only film) and is tempted to quit the business and sell up to a couple of scheming estate agents. Although slickly performed, the songs are hardly showstoppers. But Jackley's rubber-necked clowning still amuses, as does a back-and-forth routine with Jimmy Clitheroe (who had just launched his long-running BBC radio show). The scene-stealer, however, is Kirkwood's real-life spouse, Hubert Gregg, whose TV director enjoys witty badinage with both sycophantic floor manager Gerald Harper and ditzy secretary Joan Sims - who would reunite with Rothwell on 17 Carry Ons.
