A star rating of 4 out of 5.

Terry Staunton

Four Asian-American friends take an eventful trip through China to trace one of their number's birth mother in this raucous comedy, with life lessons and emotional revelations punctuating the mayhem. Run-ins with drug dealers, sexually aggressive basketball teams and others land the group in all manner of hot water, as they confront questions of race, gender, sexuality, love and loyalty. Labelling the film an Asian take on the outrageous antics of 2011's Bridesmaids wouldn't be entirely inaccurate, but director Adele Lim imbues the narrative with equally thought-provoking and serious moments. The pivots from comedy to drama are handled confidently by a talented cast with keen comic timing, in particular Ashley Park as high-flying lawyer Audrey. Some viewers may wince at the more outlandish gross-out set-pieces (co-screenwriter Cherry Chevapravatdumrong cut her teeth on episodes of TV's Family Guy), but they rarely come across as gratuitous or out of place.
