Captain Sam Walker (Kate Mara) splashes down to Earth after a space mission with a hole in her capsule that nobody can explain. Nasa quarantines her in an isolated house in the country, where she begins to suspect that she's being hunted by something. Is it an alien, or is she going loopy? With a classy cast (including Laurence Fishburne as Walker's father), a rich sci-fi concept and some well-handled moments of horror, this is halfway towards being a captivating thriller. But Walker's deteriorating sanity is irritating rather than gripping; there are only so many times someone can jerk awake after a tense set-piece, assume it was a dream and not tell anyone. Mara also plays the role with a limp, detached energy, wearing just about the same facial expression for everything from drinking coffee to fleeing a home invasion. Architecture fans will surely enjoy the gorgeous glass-walled house with its stunning green views; the film's finale is effective, too. But there's a chance you'll have aborted this mission long before that arrives.
