This joyously silly micro-budget period comedy plays out like a live-action Looney Tunes episode. It follows an alcoholic applejack salesman (played by co-writer Ryland Brickson Cole Tews) whose livelihood is destroyed when his farm goes up in flames, leaving him to fend for himself through the harsh winter. Initially hapless, he gradually masters the complex art of fur trapping - aided by a Santa Claus-resembling expert and spurred on by his newfound love for the local merchant's daughter - only for some vengeful beavers to fight back. It's a deliberately lo-fi film, with the animals all played by humans wearing comical suits, and the premise allows for an abundance of slapstick humour. Mike Cheslik's film owes an obvious debt to silent comedy pioneers like Buster Keaton and Charlie Chaplin, but its wide range of influences extends to retro video games, children's puppet shows and the work of eccentric Canadian auteur Guy Maddin. Tews excels in a stupendous physical comedy performance, and whenever things threaten to become a little repetitive, another delightful piece of visual imagination is never far away.
