Following his Oscar-winning 20 Days in Mariupol, video journalist Mstyslav Chernov returns to the Russian invasion of his native Ukraine for this unflinching report from the front line. Fellow Associated Press reporter Alex Babenko joins Chernov to cover a bid by the Third Assault Brigade to liberate the eastern village of Andriivka from Russian forces. It's a major counteroffensive that the journalists spend 18 months filming, starting in September 2023, as the troops traverse scorched woodland and mined terrain in order to reach their target. Despite the occasional potent drone shot, much of the footage comes from body-cams, offering an immersive perspective. Tautly edited, the immediacy of the camerawork coerces the viewer into confronting the grim reality, heroic futility and gut-wrenching chaos of warfare, particularly when the odds are stacked so highly in favour of an entrenched and better equipped enemy. Highlighting the humbling ordinariness of the combatants and their poignant camaraderie, Chernov refuses to spare us when it comes to casualties. Despair creeps into his voiceover, but weariness can't sap the zeal of the volunteers, as 24-year-old warehouse worker turned commander Fedya claims victory in the obliterated objective with a defiant flag-planting and the tender rescue of a frightened kitten.
