In this standalone sequel to cyber-thriller Searching (2018), a teenager investigates online when her mother, along with a new boyfriend, fails to return home from a holiday in Colombia. Like its predecessor, which starred John Cho as an amateur sleuth using the internet to find his daughter, this film's story unfolds entirely through its protagonist's computer screen. Social media, emails, texts, home security systems and more help June (Storm Reid) to uncover secrets with every click. Ultimately, the plot is ludicrous, some of the storytelling is contrived and the overambitious climax resorts to dated found-footage tactics. However, Missing still has enough clever moments to keep things entertaining, and while it lacks the freshness of its forebear, it remains a compelling, humorous and immersive experience.
