Calum Baker

One-time Superman actor Brandon Routh gets a neat little showcase with this sci-fi horror throwback. He plays Hank, a science teacher who is forced into action when his small town is threatened by a grotesque, tentacular plant appropriately nicknamed the "ick". At the same time, he starts to think one of his students (Malina Weissman) is, in fact, his daughter with his one-time high-school sweetheart (Mena Suvari), lending some emotional stakes to the creature-feature carnage. Though there's a good comic pacing with some laugh-out-loud gags, the film suffers from an inconsistent screenplay dotted with awkward character beats that the actors sometimes struggle to sell. Yet, sell it they do, with the amiable, square-jawed Routh carrying the action nicely and Weissman proving a solid foil as she sardonically squabbles with her could-be dad. Joseph Kahn directs breezily, with some creative use of camerawork and editing, not to mention splatter aplenty, all of which paper over the story's various structural problems. It is, in essence, a 2020s update of classic B-fare such as The Blob, with satirical allusions to Covid-19 dotted around for good measure. Taken on those terms, the low-budget mayhem works rather well.
