Summary
Period coming-of-age drama starring Michelle Williams, Paul Dano and Gabriel LaBelle. In 1950s Arizona, young Sammy Fabelman finds that using his dad's Super 8 camera helps him to work through his feelings, all while creating fun little stories. As he grows older and his parents' marriage gradually crumbles, Sammy realises that making movies can't solve everything - but they are his life's calling.

Steven Spielberg's work has been defined by sharks, aliens and dinosaurs, but he looks to his own childhood experiences for this late-career reflection. The semi-autobiographical drama follows Sammy Fabelman (Gabriel LaBelle), a teenager growing up in mid-century America who aspires to become a film-maker. With the marriage between his pianist mother and computer-scientist father steadily crumbling, Sammy looks to his amateur craft for escapism and therapy. A stoic Paul Dano and brittle Michelle Williams both excel as Sammy's parents, and there are noteworthy cameos from Judd Hirsch (as Sammy's eccentric grand-uncle) and David Lynch, who plays a real-life Hollywood legend with a major influence on the young artist. Spielberg takes a rare screenwriting credit here, and his lengthy but well-paced script - co-written with Tony Kushner (Munich, Lincoln) - movingly sheds new light on his previous work. As director, Spielberg tells his story with irresistible brio and a deep undercurrent of melancholy, ensuring that this grounded family tale contains as much wonder as his biggest blockbusters.
