Summary

Almost an homage to the 90s actioners of the Seagal/Lundgren/Van Damme variety, Sophia Banks's feature debut gets a toned Michelle Monaghan into a sleeveless white T-shirt to run around a series of concrete tunnels while a deadly nemesis tries to pick off her CIA psyops team. Jason Clarke plays the bad guy, named Hatchet in case there were any doubt, while Jai Courtney is an ethically compromised contractor who enjoys beating information out of detainees. As the team's second in command, Monaghan's character might be expected to know what a black site is (the torture of illegally extradited crime suspects is one of its specialist functions) but clearly the need for the audience to like the hero trumps any plot integrity. Banks, tipped as a rising talent by Baz Luhrmann, works wonders with a small budget, a couple of basic sets and committed actors, injecting energy into very familiar scenarios. The excesses of the War on Terror are obviously under scrutiny here, but in the end, the bang-bang soundtrack tells us what's really going on here - we're in meathead territory, which is all great fun if you're nostalgic for the VHS era.
