Paul Wegener, the great German actor and director, notably of The Golem (1914 and 1920), made his talkie debut under the direction of Richard Oswald in one of the last films of the Expressionist movement. Set in a shadowy England, it was based on two Edgar Allan Poe stories and one from Robert Louis Stevenson's The Suicide Club. Wegener plays a crazed inventor who kills his wife accidentally and conceals her body in a wall. The film, which seems to herald incipient Nazism, contains effective scenes in a waxworks museum and in an asylum where the lunatics have taken over.
