This exciting Hong Kong police thriller is riddled with as many genre clichés as it is bullets, but still manages to deliver the action goods in style. Donnie Yen (Ip Man) stars as a by-the-book cop who finds himself up against former colleague Nicholas Tse, who was sold out by his corrupt superiors and jailed for killing a suspect. After serving a four-year stretch, he and his crew set about seeking violent revenge. Director Benny Chan forgoes the dramatic tension of a police procedural for a series of explosive action set pieces, including a running battle through Hong Kong's busy shopping streets that neatly riffs on Michael Mann's Heat. Although the film verges on the hysterical at times (no excuse is wasted to place children in mortal danger from crazed gunmen, bombers and speeding vehicles), Yen makes for a likeably gutsy hero, and he reserves his signature martial arts moves for maximum brutal impact. Sadly, Chan (New Police Story, Shaolin) died from cancer before post-production was complete, and the end credits pay tribute to his work.
