This is a startling documentary about the American food industry and how big business manipulates what ultimately arrives on consumers' tables. But don't expect a stunt-filled Michael Moore-style exposé or the gimmicks of Morgan Spurlock's Super Size Me. Director Robert Kenner gets his points across in a no-nonsense manner, grilling farmers, nutritionists and corporate bosses about genetically modified chickens, insect-proof soya beans and "indestructible" tomatoes. The answers are often chilling, not least when Kenner discovers that overuse of antibiotics and pesticides may well have helped boost American cases of a strain of the E coli virus to 70,000 a year, or that a third of the country's children are at risk from diabetes. The heroes of the movie are the independent organic farmers who resist legislation that demands they fall in line and buy only from authorised seed distributors, although the overriding sense is that these are Davids fighting a losing battle against government-endorsed Goliaths.
