The sequel to 2018 animation Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse is every bit as exhilarating as its predecessor. It reunites us with Brooklyn high-schooler Miles Morales (voiced by Shameik Moore), who became a version of Marvel's web-slinging superhero after being bitten by a radioactive spider. Miles's tinkering with the multiverse now leads to the arrival of The Spot (Jason Schwartzman), a wannabe villain growing ever more powerful as he bends the rules of physics. With love interest Gwen Stacy (Hailee Steinfeld) back, it also pairs Miles with multiple iterations of Spidey, including Spider-Punk (Daniel Kaluuya) and Miguel O'Hara (Oscar Isaac), aka Spider-Man 2099, the moody leader of the Spider Society. The action is thrillingly directed by Justin K Thompson, Joaquim Dos Santos, and Kemp Powers, but it still puts character and charm first. It's also sprinkled with humour, courtesy of Lego Movie writers Phil Lord and Christopher Miller, together with WW84's Dave Callaham, and the blend of animation styles is deft and dizzying. No live-action superhero movies come near it.
