The politically motivated gang wars of late 1970s Jamaica are shown through the eyes of a morally conflicted, single father in writer/director Storm Saulter's ambitious and visually vibrant debut. Shot on location, using a mainly non-professional cast and crew, this fact-based crime drama impressively captures the look and feel of 1978 Kingston, as charismatic newcomer Sheldon Shepherd's impoverished community leader and gangster finds the violence he's embroiled in escalating out of control. It taints his entire life: mentally scarring the young son he wants a better life for and threatening his unconvincingly hurried romance with a country girl (Nicole "Sky" Grey) who opposes the casual bloodshed splitting the neighbourhood. Indeed, the hostility is so pervasive - though depicted without tension or depth - that the bitty and unevenly acted events sadly start to lose impact. Despite his technical prowess, Saulter lacks sufficient narrative focus, leaving his co-scripted characters largely two-dimensional and underplaying the crucial emotional aspects of Shepherd's ultimately tragic story arc.
