Summary

After two Chinese commercial ships are ambushed on the Mekong River - in the heart of the drug-fuelled Golden Triangle - Beijing sends an elite band of narcotics officers led by Captain Gao Gang (Zhang Hanyu) to uncover the truth behind the murders of thirteen sailors during the hijack. After it is discovered that the drugs seized during the raid had been planted by the henchman of a notorious drug cartel leader named Naw Khar, the governments of Thailand, Laos, Myanmar and China launch a joint task force to apprehend the criminal. Foreign language action with subtitles.

Asia's opium-producing Golden Triangle provides the lawless backdrop for this seriously action-packed thriller. Director Dante Lam takes as his cue a real-life case from 2011 where 13 Chinese fishermen were murdered by gangs operating along a notoriously dangerous stretch of the Mekong river, the gateway to China. Zhang Hanyu and Eddie Peng (The Great Wall) star as members of a joint task force assigned to the investigation, who resort to increasingly reckless and questionable methods to get results. But dealing with a foe who use junked-up child soldiers in their arsenal only confirms that, in this war, there are no rules. Restlessly kinetic even by Far Eastern standards, the film eventually settles into a tolerably frenetic groove, but it's best when Lam allows the suspense to build - a tense sting operation in a shopping mall being a standout scene. While delivering gritty excitement is its chief concern, Operation Mekong also acknowledges the ruined lives of not only the users but also the rural communities caught up in the machinations of the drugs trade.
