Summary

Comedy drama inspired by real events, starring Naoise Ó Cairealláin, Liam Óg Ó Hannaidh and JJ Ó Dochartaigh. When low-level Belfast drug dealers Naoise and Liam Óg cross paths with music teacher JJ, they form a hip-hop trio with a difference: they rap in their native Irish language. Soon, Kneecap's defiant sound has riled politicians, law enforcement and paramilitaries who want it silenced.

Terry Staunton

Inspired by real events, this comic, coarse and often violent film charts the rise of the celebrated (and notorious) Belfast hip-hop trio of the title. Comprising two low-level drug-dealing teenagers (who describe themselves as "ceasefire babies") and music teacher DJ Próvai, the group rail against the lack of opportunities for young people in Ulster in the early 21st century, while also campaigning for the Irish language to be more widely spoken. In the process they face opposition from the police, their families and various unimpressed political factions. The script, written by director Rich Peppiatt in tandem with Kneecap themselves, takes a few liberties with the truth to heighten the drama, but it's a lively and frequently laugh-out-loud tale. The sharp wit of TV's Derry Girls and the edgy exuberance of Trainspotting are possible touchstones, but the movie is its own uproarious beast. It's endlessly entertaining while making articulate, thought-provoking points about youthful rebellion, the unifying power of music and the preservation of a nation's heritage and culture
