Riley Keough and Jesse Eisenberg are unrecognisable under a weight of impressive prosthetics in David and Nathan Zellner's tragicomic tale of a clan of Sasquatches. This absurdist comedy, which co-stars Christophe Zajac-Denek and Nathan Zellner, follows a year in the life of the unlikely family as they try to survive against the odds. The Sasquatches only communicate through gestures and grunts - a testament to the actors' skill - which opens the door for a fair amount of scatological comedy as the creatures mark their turf and mate. They also have a series of surreal encounters with evidence of humans, including a campsite. Although the more primitive humour may not be for everyone, as the film progresses, the playfulness gives way to poignancy in an environment that proves more unforgiving than it initially appears. Despite the outlandishness of the premise, the Zellners make us believe in the myth, creating an immersive woodland world that includes many more familiar animals, while prompting us to consider our own place within it.
