The inhabitants of a Hamburg apartment block discover the entire building has been surrounded by a mysterious black wall overnight, imprisoning them in their homes, in this tense thriller. Led by a couple (Matthias Schweighöfer, Ruby O Fee) whose relationship is on the brink of collapse, the residents frantically attempt to smash their way through to freedom while trying to figure out how the bricks got there in the first place. Is the structure extraterrestrial, or something manmade? Writer/director Philip Koch enlists an ensemble cast of disparate players (short-tempered drug addict, frail old man, unhinged conspiracy theorist) for what amounts to an elaborate escape room with a potentially deadly end game. The suspense and plot twists are handled confidently, teasing viewers with sundry red herrings along the way, but the characters aren't developed nearly enough (some are paper-thin), making it hard to root for their survival. Nevertheless, it's a perfectly watchable and light fright-fest with sparse but effective camera trickery.
